los angeles based cartoonist tom neely is another recently-acquired favorite of mine.

early on i wanted to do a comic book composed of full-page panels only. but convention, standards, and guidelines told me that this was a stupid idea.

but here this guy has the balls to just go and do it and he winds up with a masterpiece. it's called "the wolf" [link]

i also can't stop gut-laughing over his series "henry+glenn 4-eva"
i also highly recommend "the blot".

some good chuckles are to be found at skeletonballs.com: [link]

the site is run by Nils Hanczar, another outstanding individual i had the pleasure to meet
at the pittsburgh toonseum mini-con.

fellow cartoonists and zinesters will immediately dig the visual layout of the site,
which includes galleries of some really funny toons that exhibit a warm sense of humor,
and a store which includes comic books of Nils' work for DIRT CHEAP.

he also sells screen-printed t-shirts on there too.

so check out the site and check him out on facebook: [link]

from what i can gather of our fellow deviant nick marino,
:iconnickmarino:
it appears that he is quite the pillar of the indie comics scene here in pittsburgh.
he's another one of those guys that collaborates with the other artists constantly.
viewing his table at the con, as well as a couple of others, i must've seen close to
a dozen or more projects with nick's creative fingerprints all over them.

i purchased a copy of a comic he co-writes for, "Time Log" which is a comic
that draws initial inspiration from 80's gems like "bill & ted's excellent adventure"
and "back to the future".

i've also been following his webcomic series "super-haters" off and on now for about a year or more. you MUST check this stuff out. i guarantee you haven't read anything like this before.

first i want to introduce you all to the warped work of Lizzee Solomon
except the words escape me on how to properly describe her work to you.
when i met her what i first saw were her collection of glossy-printed postcards
of various warped cartoon gals as various erotic food products.

so it was a breeze talking to someone else trying to sell erotic work there, but
Lizzee is also a really approachable and sweet lady with an outstanding sense of
humor that shines through in both her personality and her work.

her book Mutual paradise is a vortex of manic and demented facial expressions,
oozing pustules, and folds of flesh of which are all gloriously drawn and told with an
exquisitely sharp wit.

Tom Scioli is a really nice dude that i had the pleasure of heartily chatting with.
His skills as a cartoonist are a jaw-dropping, a kirby-esque feast for the eyes.
dude was cool enough to swap his new book with mine, "American Barbarian".

American Barbarian is a gorgeous, thick, hard-cover book published by adhouse books.
it evokes everything barbarian-inspired, from barry windsor-smith, jack kirby, and alex toth,
to the 1980's he-man cartoons and early cerebus, but all executed in a gorgeous original style with a brilliant color palette that pops right off of the page.

Tom is also co-creator of the eisner-nominated series "Godland"
and the xeric-grant-winning "unmortals: the myth of 8-opus"

Speaking of easily approachable sweet individuals, check out our extremely prolific
fellow deviant Barry Linck
:iconphinmagic:

his gorgeous penmanship of slick cartoons showcasing dudes duking it out with monsters, creatures and ghouls of all lore can be found in the series "Bobby Carter: Creephunter"
which is written by the oustanding gentleman Mikey Wood.

There is also his own project, "Phineus: Magician for Hire"

to name all of his work here and to do it proper justice would be extremely difficult as i have said that he is quite prolific and is one of several artists i met (whom i plan to feature here) who collaborate back and forth like crazy.

so please do yourself a favor and check out his work.

i don't know if my word is worth much, but a quick word of advice to my fellow artists that like to draw erotic work:

i restrained myself in my work for years, insisting on keeping things "tasteful". finally something just snapped and i decided i was going to try whatever the fuck i want to. i have never looked back since.

i draw what excites me. since i am a heterosexual male of early to mid adulthood, it's not that outlandish that what excites me is women.

i was showing my work recently at a show where a couple of women (really attractive and gorgeous, by the way) started dissing my work "oh yeah THOSE [the breasts] are real, mine look just like those". i tried to politely explain that the drawing in question was an accurate drawing of a friend of mine and that i do my best to pay tribute to the female form without objectifying anyone. but they wouldn't even listen to me and just laughed in my face. i did my best to just smile and shrug it off.

i did feel kinda bad about it. i really try my best to respect the sensibilities of other people. those women have every right to critique my work as they see fit and i will never get belligerent or mean with anyone who wants to criticize my work.

however, i know who i am. making people feel inadequate or insecure or exploited or uncomfortable is the antithesis of what i'm all about.

my point is, draw whatever you want. art is subjective so if people see something filthy or dirty or cruel in your work it's largely because that's what, to one degree or another, they were looking for in the first place.

so the last two days i was at the Pittsburgh Toonseum Minicon selling copies of Postland and prints of my other work.

i had an amazing time and met a lot of cool artists living here in pittsburgh, of which i will be featuring in my journals here throughout the next couple of weeks. seriously, i had no idea how tightly knit, warm and welcoming the comics community in pittsburgh was, as i am usually a homebody who doesn't get out much.

***

anyways i was talking to this one guy who was really interested in my work. real nice dude. had an excellent conversation with him for at least a full 5 minutes before he introduced himself as Jim Rugg. an artist who's work i've been reading and following for at least 7 years, creator of the series "street angel" and "afrodisiac".

my buddy, pittburgh artist ed piskor of "american splendour" had tried to get me to come down to Jim's show being currently exhibited down at the toonseum, but i couldn't get out of work and was too tired to make it to opening night.

jim rugg is cooler than a cucumber and had a wealth of advice and encouragement to offer. which is why i want you all to PLEASE check him out and his work.

speaking of ed piskor, the man is a class act. if any of you have bought a copy of my graphic novel "postland" you'll notice that i pay him thanks on page 2 (he also has a brief cameo in one of the panels of the story).

the man has been endlessly helpful and encouraging, sharing resources, tips and advice. can't pay the man enough thanks for his generosity, so please check out his stuff. he just released a graphic novel "wizzywig" through top shelf comics, his magnum opus about computer and phone hackers in the 80's and 90's and is currently working on the amazing "hip hop family tree" which ambitiously chronicles the early roots of old school hip hop.

i am in the process of archiving my best works as well as works i have recently sold through etsy.

all of my drawings are on thick bristol and done in pen, ink and markers.

can anybody tell me what the best finishes, clear coats, or sealants are to use?

can anybody vouch for the longetivity of a work that has been sprayed or coated with said products?

any insight or advice i would appreciate. :peace:
